Topic: From the beginning it was not so 79

Scripture: Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.” (Luke 23:34)

Note: The three disciples chose the easiest option to sleep on the job, listening more to the tiredness of their frail bodies when the Master expected them to keep faith by staying awake for him.

These disciples had seen it all. They were with Christ at the Mount of Transfiguration. They saw and heard the testimonies of Moses and Elijah, the greatest lawgiver and prophet respectively. The invincible Elijah, who could stop rain in a whole nation for three and a half years, a man who could command fire from heaven to consume his enemies and even an altar drenched in water, a man who cheated on death and got teleported to heaven by a heavenly chariot of fire, even Elijah, was after all no match in position, power and purpose compared to Christ. This was not hearsay. They saw and heard it live and coloured.

So what reason would they have to harbour fear of the possibility of Jesus being captured, when they were understandably tired after a very stressful day? Such fear would have been assumely paranoid, for after all this is Jesus, who was able to raise Lazarus from the dead after 4 days in the grave. Wow! They had a very comfortable time of sleep as the Master agonised alone for his approaching death.

Food for thought: This act of sleep was one of the most costly dereliction of duty based on wrong assumptions. Do we make it a habit of assuming things for God by living wretched lives? This time the price could be your own life. Think again.

Declaration: There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. (Prov. 14:12)
