Topic: Safety is of the Lord 14
Reading: 1Sam 23:7-14
Scripture: And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath delivered him into my hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars. (1Sam 23:7)
Note: The day Saul missed his moment with God, he never realized the true extent of what he had really lost. The failure to carry out God’s instructions to the letter in the war against the Amalekites, carried a much deeper dimension in weight and for generations to come than Saul could possibly have thought of or ever imagined.
Amalek was the first nation to have attacked Israel in the wilderness during the early part of the exodus from Egypt. Israel was vulnerable and almost defenceless as a people except for God’s protection. In perpetuating that wicked and heartless attack, they demonstrated their desire to wipe out Israel as a nation. Secondly, they taught other nations that it was normal to attack Israel. God wasn’t pleased with Amalek, and for what they did against His people. Therefore, He swore to wipe Amalek out from the face of the earth.
Saul’s disobedience thus placed him in the line of fire of God’s wrath. God rejected his authority as king of Israel. He removed His Spirit from Saul. And by that, Saul lost the covering and protection that he had as king of Israel. He was no more in favour and became exposed to demonic attacks on his life. Saul’s natural predisposition to act emotionally immature on critical occasions made him a vulnerable target for demonic obsession, oppression and harassment.
Saul’s vulnerable condition made him a virtual tool in the hands of demonic forces who began to dictate his life, fuelling his political war with David and wanting to use Saul as a means to abort the plan of God to make David the next king of Israel. Saul lost control of his mind, yielding to the satanic spirits of vendetta and murder in his fruitless chase against David, the anointed of the Lord.
Food for thought: Lack of self control exposes one to fear, which in turn opens the doorway for demonic obsession, oppression and depression.
Declaration: For God hath not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2Tim 1:7)
