Topic: The empty tomb 30

Reading: Matthew 27:57-66, 28:1-15

Scripture: He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee. (Luke 24:6)

Note: When the Samaritan woman met Jesus at the well, she wasn’t looking for a male companion. After all, she already had one at home providing her company. This one hadn’t walked her through the aisle yet, but she still considered him special, a friend with privileges in modern day terms, a euphemism for unmarried couple sharing the same sexual privileges as married people, but with no binding commitment to the relationship.

She was there mainly to fetch water for her personal domestic needs. She wasn’t expecting to meet people at the well. Her attention was arrested suddenly by this stranger of a Jewish Rabbi promising her a gift from God and going further to make an atrocious and unbelievable offer of giving her living water that will never make her thirst for water again. Naturally, every sane person will be interested in such a wonderful gift that will not necessitate her never having to walk some distance daily in the heat of the sun to quench her thirst needs.

Jesus said in John 4:13, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.” Nothing on this earth truly satisfies. Not even good things like fresh air, fresh water, warm sunshine, healthy food or even the love of a goodly person can replace the gift of eternal life that comes from God.

Temporary satisfaction is deceptive, doesn’t have lasting effect, may lead to heartaches, pain, disappointments, just like the woman had experienced on five different occasions in her previous marriages, or sometimes even death. She was willing to settle for less; everyday water on earth. Jesus’ desire for her was everlasting life and joy. She must be willing to give up her desires on earth which are shortlived and only goes as far as satisfying our body, so that she could embrace the life that comes from God.

Food for thought: Jesus had to put aside basic Jewish etiquette concerning the conduct of Rabbi and women in public in order to rescue a woman with destiny awaiting her. He risked ruining his name, integrity and reputation before others, including his own disciples so that he could touch this woman of destiny with the flame of eternity. What do you risk losing for the sake of the kingdom?

Declaration: Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish His work. (John 4:34)
