Scripture: Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.” (Luke 23:34)

Note: The truth is that Jesus, who managed to stay awake during the agony of Gethsemane, had always been a busier person than his 3 disciples, who disingenuously slept on the job while their Master endured the agony of the suffering and separation from the Father awaiting him.

As written in the Gospels, it was the habit of Jesus to wake up a great while before day to pray, even after a previous day heavy schedule of teaching in the synagogues, preaching in the open, healing the sick, delivering the oppressed, strategising how to outwit his enemies including avoiding landmines set as traps for him and travelling great distances on foot from place to place to minister to people. Inspite of his normal heavy daily schedule, he was able to stay awake that night for more than 3 hours in travail while the less busier disciples, whose main preoccupation had been to watch the Master display, while they kept themselves busy doing bodyguard work and creating unnecessary barriers for people like blind Bartimaeus, who needed access to the Lord.

The difference between the Lord and his disciples was lack of purpose and passion. It takes passion for one to have the driving force to pursue his true purpose in life. Jesus knew the purpose for which he came; to redeem fallen man and destroy the works of the enemy. Being a driven man, he gave everything while on earth with so much passion that he died at an early age of 33 years, having given everything.

Food for thought: Do you know your purpose in life? What is it that drives you for God?

Declaration: He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. (1John 3:8)
