Scripture: Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.” (Luke 23:34)

Note: Peter, James and John were caught on three separate occasions by Christ for sleeping when their job schedule for that specific period required them to stay awake, watching and praying for their Master. Their only excuse for that negligence was that they were tired.

In the secular world of multinational corporations, sleeping on the job is classified as theft of an employer’s time. This is because the employee gets paid for a specific time of engagement by the employer, hence sleeping outside the agreed break period is considered a breach of contract and punishable per the collective bargaining agreement.

A story is told of a Production Foreman in a company who had given 17 years of stellar performance to the company. Hence, a report on him by colleagues to the General Manager for continually sleeping on the job was not treated seriously due to the employee’s background. However, persistent reports and a follow up investigation supported by video evidence proved that the report was true. Unaware of the video evidence and faced with questioning for sleeping on the job, the employee failed to accept that he had indeed been sleeping on the job; an admission that would have attracted less stiffer punishment. But for his duplicity, the GM was left with no option but to dismiss him.

The three disciples slept recklessly at a time Jesus, the Master, the Prince of Peace, the Saviour of mankind was being offered cheaply for sale on the slave market, at the same price for that of a slave. Yet, Christ’s mercy gave them a second chance.

Food for thought: Have we ever pondered over the ramifications of our spineless excuses in our failure to pray, that have resulted in unimaginable damages caused to the body of Christ and God’s Kingdom? Unfortunately, we are not disturbed and our sleep is uninterrupted because we simply don’t care.

Declaration: And behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. (Rev. 22:12)
