Topic: From the beginning it was not so 50

Scripture: He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. (Matt 19:8)

Note: In his commentary on Heb. 9:16, John Calvin said, “all the heathen sacrifices were corruptions, which had derived their origin from the institutions of God.”

Heb. 9:16, “For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.” Where a will is involved, the death of the one who made the will must be established for the will to take effect. Every covenant is ratified by blood, as the shedding of blood signifies death. For the life of an animal is in the blood. The first covenant was inaugurated by blood, culminating in the inauguration of the new covenant, which is the last and final covenant ratified with the blood of Jesus. Everything is purified by blood and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. (Heb. 9:22).

Pagan religions have always practised appeasing their deities through blood sacrifices. This is an attempt to mimic the original institution of God, which is the forgiveness of sins through the shedding of blood. The entire Jewish system of worship was based on blood sacrifices, instituted to point ahead to the one all-sufficient sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Food for thought: If I have Jesus, I have all that I need for life.

Declaration: For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. (Heb. 9:24)
