Topic: The empty tomb 51

Reading: Matthew 27:57-66, 28:1-15

Scripture: He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee. (Luke 24:6)

Note: After a little over a century since the theory of the subjective vision hypothesis was thrown into the mix to salvage the sinking image of the vision hypothesis that was gasping for oxygen on the overwhelming evidence of the Gospel narratives that had proven historical evidence to back their claim, another variant of the vision hypothesis was added to the long list of various hypothesis, crafted to derail believers in the literal bodily resurrection of Jesus, as the subjective vision hypothesis woefully failed to explain away the fact of the missing body of Jesus, resulting in the empty tomb phenomenon.

This new ideology, that goes by the name “Objective Vision Hypothesis” was designed by Hans Grass in 1964, and it states that Jesus’ spirit was resurrected but his body remained dead, explaining the belated conversion of Jesus’ half-brother James. However, Grass’ objective vision hypothesis has barely continued to survive above the grass level in terms of making inroads into the objective world of academia as it finds no echo in more recent scholarship.

The objective vision hypothesis is a more subtle view of the resurrection. It affirms the reality of a supernatural experience having taken place in which God gave the disciples a vision of Jesus in glory, where God had raised him from the dead. Unfortunately for proponents of this view, they failed to arrive at a consensus on the theory, divided along two views.

The first view acquiesces to the truth of the empty tomb, believing that God transformed the body of Jesus in the tomb into a spiritual body that was immaterial, invisible and nonphysical. God gave the disciples a vision of the glorified Christ. The 2nd view says that the physical body remained in the tomb and decayed, wasting away. But God raised Jesus in a spiritual body which is distinct from, and nonidentical to the corpse in the tomb.

Food for thought: The self-inflicted damage and confusion generated by these two views fighting against the truth of the literal bodily resurrection of Jesus, is a confirmation of the fact that a house divided against itself shall never stand.

Declaration: And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.” (Matthew 12:25)
